~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Each month hundreds of animals enter the Weatherford/Parker County Animal Shelter. Parker Paws was created by community volunteers to help support these animals.
Our goal is simple and humane: We work to increase pet adoptions and improve the quality of life for the animals in the shelter. This is done by taking pets to offsite adoption events in the community, maintaining our Petfinder.com site so that potential adopters can learn of our pets, socializing and grooming the shelter animals, providing public animal welfare education, fostering pets that are too young for adoption and/or need more time before being adopted, and raising funds for items needed at the shelter.
Meet Barbara Pursley, President of Parker Paws. Barbara has been a volunteer at the shelter since 1998. She lives in Parker County with her husband, Roy, and four cats. Ginger is a long-haired calico adopted from the shelter. She’s the diva of the house and maintains reign over the others. Barbara vaguely recalls having other hobbies, but spends much of her time these days at the shelter or updating Petfinder with pictures of the adoptable animals.
Denise Cook is a lifelong animal lover and advocate. She has been volunteering at the shelter since 2005. Denise writes and photographs for The Horseman Magazine and freelances in Public Relations and as a photographer when time permits. She is devoted to her English husband, Alan and their three dogs, Rosie, Rebel and Baxter. You can see a sample of her photographs at www.denisecookphotography.com.
In support of national Spay Day USA, Parker Paws is sponsoring spay/neuter surgery for 25 cats for just $5 each this February. This special is being offered to low-income residents of Parker County. You may download an application here or pick up an application at the Weatherford/Parker County Animal Shelter at 403 Hickory Lane in Weatherford. You may also call 817-599-6197 to have an application mailed to you. Surgery will be performed on Feb. 24, so please apply soon.
